Wifi Upgrades
Submitted by RCaston on Thu, 2009-09-03 15:54 -Today I ordered the D-Link DIR-855 from my friends at Newegg. This device is a bit overpriced, but with the current firmware and rev chipset seems to be one of the better choices for handling mixed mode 2.4ghz/5ghz wireless.
Most broadband routers advertise they are 'dual-band', meaning they can transmit 2.4ghz and 5ghz at the same time, however this is misleading as they are not 'dual-radio' or 'dual-transmitter'; so you get a device that ends up gimping both frequencies when you run mixed mode.
The solution to this problem are the dual-radio generation of mixed mode wifi routers, as each radio handles each frequency.
Can't wait to try it out next week :)
Fiber Rocks
Submitted by RCaston on Tue, 2009-09-01 15:34 -Well I've had fiber to the home for about a month now, and it's great. I had some serious issues getting it installed, one of which I felt deserved a touch of satire, but after four service visits, they finally got me hooked up.
Now that I have service, I'm a big fan, the speed is amazing and the TV quality is superior to my old provider.
Now the issue seems to be with my wireless network, in the past my broadband was slow enough that I didn't notice the problems with it, however this is now changed. I will be looking to upgrade my wireless network later this week and see how it goes.
